i’ve never heard of this. that would be somethin.

killfornia:

Coffin Birth or Postmortem Fetal Extrusion is the delivery of a nonviable fetus from the body of its decomposing mother. The fetus is expelled from the uterus through the vaginal opening as a result of the gases produced during the bloat stage of decomposition. These gases increase intra-abdominal pressure, pressing on the uterus enough to deliver the child and in some cases, causing the uterus to prolapse or evert (turn inside out).

“Coffin Birth” is generally considered a rare event in pathology. The above images are from a 2008 homicide case of a 38-year-old woman who was 7 months pregnant. She had disappeared from her home in Panama and was found several days later in a state of advanced putrefaction. She had been gagged and had a plastic bag tied around her head. The fetus was discovered in the woman’s underwear at the moment of undressing the body for autopsy. The advanced state of decomposition was a consequence of the heat and humidity of the environment in which the bodies were found.

Translation of captions from the Spanish:

Figure 1 : Detail of the upper part of the corpse of the woman in an advanced state of putrefaction with a piece of cloth inserted in the mouth (arrow).

Figure 3: Fetal parts and umbilical cord found inside the mother’s underwear.

Figure 4: Fetus with umbilical cord and placenta in an advanced state of decay.

someone’s facebook status

got a tour at the Alameda coroners office today and saw some extremely gruesome bodies. saw a mother emotionally unravel. saw pictures of autopsies and crime scenes. learned that the real world(especially cops) are not polite and professional at all. what an experience.

one of my lab students just posted this as their facebook status.

wtf were they thinking. you KNOW what i do. screw your commentary on law enforcement. thank god you’ve been scared away from disgracing the profession. AND i WILL see you in lab. prepare for the dirtiest looks you’ve ever received. ever.

the cops probably picked up that you are a pretender and didn’t feel like being awesome around you anyway.

Anonymous: I've been interested in becoming an ME for a few years now and I was wondering how visible piercings/tattoos and oddly colored hair are viewed in the industry.

I have my ears pierced 3 times, my nose pierced, and had the whole underside of my head bleached for a while… they thought it was cool. I’m also considering getting my first tattoos but plan to have them in usually covered places. I think the key is moderation, everything should be tasteful and not crazy dramatic. So no aggressive/obscene tattoos, all tattoos should be covered for court trials, piercings should not affect proper laboratory practices, and hair color should be a mostly natural color (sorry but you need to look professional or no one will believe your science). While I think the industry has totally become more acceptable of body modification, it is taking baby steps…if you’re really concerned about a specific piercing or tattoo, it’s probably not appropriate.

bout that time for the Fire Death Class
for those of you who are new, I assist in teaching a Forensic Fire Death Investigation Course where we crash cars, planes and other things with cadavers inside and then light them on fire or actually make them explode (with the aid of sexy firemen on hand of COURSE) Then we facilitate training for fire investigations to police, fire investigators, coroners, forensic entomologists, and others who don’t regularly or ever, receive proper training on how to handle a fire scene.
tl;dr - i burn bodies and then poke them for SCIENCE and there are firemen there.

medical artifact pre-autopsy.
so annoying. i once found scissors from the emt’s still with the body. so we kept them because they were sharper than ours. finders keepers.

I'm a mexican-german assistant coroner, assistant laboratory manager, and a belly dancer. This blog is mostly about my daily "doings" but common themes are autopsies, cats, crafts, middle eastern dance, and the woes of a 20-something year old girl ♥
